J.D.'s Digest-February, 2010

Dell's Desk

Something happened on January 2, 2010 that I can't fully explain.

It was as if someone flipped a switch and Americans woke up that morning thinking that everything was going to be okay; the economy was starting to recover.

We have noticed a marked increase in visitors to our sales lot. We're getting more phone calls for our Sales Department and our website visitors have increased by as much as 75%.

It has been suggested that the RV industry is the first to decline in a recession and the first to see signs of growth during an economic recovery. If that is correct then we are on our way to a very good year.

Please, tell your friends about us. Come down to the store, even if it's just for a cup of coffee.

Dell Sanders,
General Manager

R&R by RV at New Zealand’s Family-Friendly Holiday Parks  - My husband was driving our rental RV on the North Island of New Zealand, past emerald green pastures dotted with snowy white sheep, when he asked where we should stop for the night. We were heading toward a swath of lush, jungle-like greenery that looked like a hybrid of the Sierra Nevada and Hawaii because groves of pine emerged from a tropical rainforest and a snow-capped peak rose above a beach.

Service Desk

I'm often asked for suggestions regarding keeping an RV water system clean. Below are some of my thoughts on this subject.

Let's start with the "city" or outside water supply. Always use a "drinking water safe" water hoses. These hoses don't support algae growth inside the hose. A typical garden hose may attract algae growth inside the hose. Attach a water filter (housing with a replaceable cartridge) to the hose before the water enters your coach. A carbon cartridge will reduce bad taste and odor, chlorine taste and odor and reduce sediment. Now you're ready to fill your fresh water tank.

Filtered water in your tank will stay fresh for quite a while. But, unless you are full timing or otherwise go through most of your fresh water on each trip, you should empty and clean your fresh water tank every two or three months.

The Clorox website provides instructions for sanitizing drinking water. I recommend that if you are going to use bleach in your tank use the Clorox recommendation. Excessive bleach can and likely will damage seals. You don't want that.

Use 8 drops of bleach per gallon of fresh water. There are 120 drops in a teaspoon. (I bet you didn't know that.) So, one teaspoon of bleach will sanitize 15 gallons of water. One tablespoon of bleach will sanitize 45 gallons of water and about two and one-third tablespoons of bleach will sanitize 105 gallons of water.

Carefully add the proper amount of bleach to your fresh water hose. Attach the hose to your water source and completely fill the fresh water tank. Wait about 30 minutes. Now, empty the tank and refill with filtered fresh water. You may want to rinse a second time. That is up to you.

Having said all that, I still recommend commercial fresh water tank chemicals. We stock them in the store. Read David's comments below for more information.

When you store your RV for weeks at a time do you drain the water tank? Do you  drain the water heater? If you don't and you notice an unexpected aroma in your water, then I suggest you try either of these products below. We stock them in the store.

Sales Desk

From January 28, through the 31st we took part in the annual Ocala RV Show. Thousands of RV owners and wannabes were there. Were you among them?

We had twelve units on display. I think that every one of those thousands of attendees visited each of our coaches. So, we are seeing an increase in camper interest and we look forward to a great 2010 season. Already we’ve had several owners upgrade their campers. This has helped our pre-owned inventory grow. As of this writing we have we even 3 units under $10,000.

Several new RVs are on the way to us. Our inventory is growing as is our family of RV owners. Help us grow our family. I’d like to invite you into our family by placing you, your friends and your relatives in an RV from J.D. Sanders RV Center.
