If you’re traveling through Gainesville Florida or live close by, head on over to the 76th annual 2015 Pepsi Florida Relays being held at the University of Florida campus. The Relays are one of the biggest sporting events in town and always bring in some serious competition from all the over the world. Every year some of the best high school and collegiate athletes come together and compete for the top titles. The relays are a chance for these students to go against some of the best high school and collegiate athletes in the country and test themselves against the best. If you choose to go you will see these track stars pushing themselves to the limit and breaking out some of their fastest times of the year. The three-day long event will feature the nation's most elite athletes such as: Jessica Beard, Andrea Bliss, Justin Gatlin, David Oliver, and many more. The best names in track are right in our backyard, so get out there and see them!

    A Brief History

Here’s a little history on how the Florida Relays came to be. The Relays have been around for 76 years, with the first event being held in 1939. That first event was only a 1-day event with a little over 200 athletes competing in various events. Today, the Relays are a 3-day event that attracts more than 3,000 athletes each year from high school, collegiate and international ranks. The relays have been held every year since 1939, with the exception of the WWII years (1942-1946) and 2006 due to construction around the Percy Beard Track. The history surrounding the relays also includes Coach Percy Beard’s installment of the first ever all weather track surface called Grasstex in 1959, one of his many track innovations for the University of Florida.

The event kicks off today, April 2 and includes more than 280 college, club and professional teams as well as over 320 high schools from all around the country.
