    Tailgating in "Gator-Land"

    Tailgating in “Gator-Land”

“Are you ready for some football?!”

That’s right college football fans, school is back in session and its time for tailgating season!  Gator fans are gearing up and getting ready to kick the football season into high gear.  We’ve got some tips to make your Saturday tailgates the best they can be this season.

Weather you are a die hard Florida Gators fan or a visitor to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the first thing you need to know about your tailgating trip is where to park. There are several different options for RV parking and tailgating both on and off campus.  Reserved parking is available for the booster club members at the UAA Reserved Parking lot on campus. Public RV parking is available at multiple lots on and off campus.  There is a park and ride lot for RV’s that is next to the Hilton Hotel with shuttle services to and from the games.  For a complete map of where to park visit  http://www.gatorzone.com/facilities/parking-football.

Once you are parked and ready to tailgate, what do you need? Here are a few essentials you’ll need to make your tailgating party a success.

    1. Decorations/Accessories-  Decking out your RV in your teams logo and colors is the best way to show your support.  Gators bleed orange and blue so you’ll need plenty of orange and blue accessories.  These can include plates and silverware, balloons and streamers, banners/tablecloths with Gator Insignia; all are great examples of how you can incorporate your team spirit into your party planning.

    2.  Food/Drinks-  plan your grocery list ahead of time.  Decide if you are going to grill out or bake, have friends bring a dish to pass to help alleviate the work load, and have snacks to munch on while the food is being prepared.  Then there’s the drinks,  you can either have everyone BYOB or supply a keg or cooler full of beer to share.  To keep things nice and cool without worrying about having enough ice to last all day, try pre-filling water bottles and freezing them and placing in coolers to keep food and drinks cold.  Deserts are a must for any tailgate party. Cookies and cupcakes can be decorated in your teams colors as well.  Cupcakes with blue and orange frosting, or a cake with a gator logo, or football shaped cookies are fun and delicious treats. There are plenty of other great food and drink ideas on the web if you are looking for suggestions.

    3.  Entertainment- Most people that tailgate are ticket holders and enjoy the live action inside the stadium. But, if that’s not your cup of tea, there are plenty of ways you can keep up on game time info and keep your party goers entertained.  Many RV’s now are equipped with flat screen TV’s on the exterior of the rig; A great way to watch the game or keep up on pre and post game stats.  Portable radios are another great way to tune into the game.  For those people that  just come for the party tailgating games are a great way to keep those less enthused with football entertained.  Bags and beer pong seem to be the top games for college tailgate parties.  Even games like washers and ring toss are making a comeback. Pick a favorite or two and set them up for your guests to enjoy!

    4. Friends/Family/Fun!- what’s a party without people to enjoy it! Whether you are a college student hanging with your buddies or just a long time football fan that wants to enjoy time with your family, tailgating is a great way to spend time with people and let loose.  The more people the merrier I always say and if you incorporate all the things we mentioned above, your tailgate party will more than likely draw other people in looking to have a good time.  Football games are a great way to socialize and meet new people that share similar interests, so start your tailgate planning today!
